Learn how to use ChatGPT effectively — getting started, choosing the right model, custom GPTs, advanced features, and tips for the best results in 2026.
ChatGPT, made by OpenAI, is the most widely used AI assistant in the world with over 200 million weekly users. It's the Swiss Army knife of AI — capable of text, image generation, voice conversation, web browsing, code execution, and more.
This guide covers everything from getting started to advanced features. For detailed model comparisons, visit our ChatGPT vs Claude and ChatGPT vs Gemini pages.
ChatGPT is an AI chatbot developed by OpenAI that can engage in natural language conversations, answer questions, write content, generate code, create images, and more. Launched in November 2022, it popularized AI assistants and remains the most feature-rich AI platform available.
What sets ChatGPT apart is its breadth: it combines text generation, image creation (DALL-E), video generation (Sora), voice mode, web browsing, code execution, custom GPTs, and a massive plugin ecosystem — all in one interface.
chatgpt.com — Visit chatgpt.com and create a free account. You can start chatting immediately with GPT-4o. No credit card required for the free tier.
Mobile apps — Download the ChatGPT app for iOS or Android. The mobile app supports voice mode for hands-free conversations.
API — For developers, sign up at platform.openai.com. The API supports text, images, function calling, assistants, and more. Check our pricing calculator for cost estimates.
GPT-5.4 — OpenAI's latest flagship. Supports 1M token context, native image/video understanding, and advanced reasoning. Available on ChatGPT Plus. Best for: complex tasks, research, creative projects.
GPT-4o — The previous generation flagship, still excellent for most tasks. Fast, capable, and more affordable via API. Best for: everyday use, writing, analysis.
GPT-4o-mini — The fastest and cheapest model. Great for simple tasks at high volume. Best for: chatbots, classification, basic Q&A.

Image Generation (DALL-E) — Create images from text descriptions directly in the chat. "Generate a watercolor painting of a cat reading a book in a library" → instant image.
Voice Mode — Have spoken conversations with ChatGPT. Available on mobile and web. Useful for brainstorming, language practice, and hands-free use.
Custom GPTs — Create specialized AI assistants with custom instructions, knowledge bases, and capabilities. Share them publicly via the GPT Store or keep them private for your team.
Code Interpreter — Upload files and have ChatGPT analyze data, create visualizations, and run Python code. Excellent for data analysis without writing code yourself.
Web Browsing — ChatGPT can search the web for current information, making it useful for research on recent topics.
Free tier — Access to GPT-4o with message limits, basic image generation, and web browsing. Sufficient for casual use.
ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) — Higher message limits, GPT-5.4 access, priority during peak times, DALL-E image generation, voice mode, custom GPTs, and Sora video generation. Best for regular users who need the latest features.
ChatGPT Team ($25/user/month) — Workspace for teams, admin controls, shared custom GPTs, and data exclusion from training.
ChatGPT Enterprise — Unlimited usage, SSO, analytics, and enterprise-grade security. Contact OpenAI for pricing.

Use Custom Instructions. Set persistent preferences in Settings → Custom Instructions. Tell ChatGPT about your role, preferred response style, and common tasks. These apply to all conversations.
Be direct and specific. ChatGPT is more compliant than Claude — it does what you ask without questioning. This means being specific matters even more: vague prompts produce generic output.
Use GPT-5.4 for complex tasks. Don't default to the latest model for everything. GPT-4o-mini is faster and cheaper for simple tasks. Use GPT-5.4 for tasks that need deep reasoning, creative writing, or complex code.
Upload files for context. Instead of copy-pasting, upload documents, images, or code files. ChatGPT processes them more reliably than pasted text, especially for large content.
Browse our prompts. Start with proven prompts from our prompt library rather than writing from scratch. We have 1,400+ tested prompts across 14 categories.
